EVO:Rail’s EVO:Lution

In 2012, the then CTO of VMware, Dr Steve Herrod, was credited with coining the term ‘software-designed data centre’ or SDDC.

The principle is quite simple; abstract the compute stack components into a software layer. This then orchestrates and manages those components to deliver a consistent and repeatable deployment model.

Today the message consumers are hearing is that large hardware deployments for data centres are yesterday’s solution.

Hyper-convergence and SDDCs are the future with software driven architecture being the key to delivering infrastructure efficiency, transparency and productivity. By eliminating the need for large amounts of infrastructure through hyper-convergence, customers are able to –

• Lower power consumption in their data centres
• Reign in administration overheads and reduce a large part of their business’ infrastructure budget.

Make way for EVO:Rail

Given the background to the concept of an SDDC, it came as no surprise when VMware announced its own take on a hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) with the launch of its EVO:RAIL appliance in 2014.

Despite some vendors having had a head start, in just over a year since launching its product, VMware is proving to be an effective option for data centre architects seeking to reduce costs and simplify their landscape.
