cDot, so what?

September 16, 2015

Storage is pretty complicated, as are the solutions available within the market; they all promise to make your life easier for the bargain price of your soul and a budgetary figure that wouldn’t look out of place on a National Lottery Winners cheque.

There was a stage when NetApp were the new kids on the block, disruptive and innovative and picking a fight with the big boys but now it’s fair to say that they’re well established as market defining leaders and have pretty much taken up residence in the FTSE 500. Conversely they are equally embraced within the SME market, you could say because they’ve made it their business to make everyone’s life easier.

Then along came the introduction of Cluster Data ONTAP or cDot, NetApp’s way of dragging your data centre into 2015, the ultimate opportunity to use a single data management platform across IT resources, from flash to disk to cloud and everyone has panicked because it involves migration and change; and being British, we’re wary of change, it’s an unwritten technology law.

But let’s face it, traditional hardware silos have had their day, their limits in performance availability and efficiency are now so remarkably transparent given the capability that is now rife in the market; that’s why C-Dot should be such an appealing option; most businesses are far from predictable and the storage and applications demands are growing exponentially and showing no signs of slowing up, so flexibility is key. Not just talking about it, actually making it happen.

Any migration requires planning and an appetite or need for change but the path to C-Dot can be remarkably simple and the benefits are abundant. In line with everything that NetApp have done since they came into the market, they’ve somehow managed to provide a straight forward answer to an increasingly complex problem; C-Dot if it’s implemented well gives organizations and cloud service providers the capability to rapidly deliver new services and capacity with maximum application uptime at a price. Oh and it’s cost effective too.
